Across the garden, Xenia was drawing listless circles on her chart, which had barely altered during all these months in Rome, despite the addition of a few new colors. She put down her pen and gazed over at Ovid, who sat staring up at the sky. She bent her strength on seeing into his mind, seeing what was there, what she was to do—because surely something must happen. Was she to be Circe, turning men into pigs? Orpheus, making rocks sing? Or Psyche herself, voyaging for love to the underworld and miraculously finding her way out again?

She saw nothing, just his lean dark head, his lifeless eyes. The air was heavy and still.

He was rolling his pen back and forth on the table; she could almost hear him breathe. He looked up but did not meet her eyes. In the garden, the lemon leaves rustled; a speck of ash drifted upon the herm. She drew another slow circle on her chart and became aware of her heart thudding in her ribs. She found herself counting its beats as a bare, dry emptiness opened up inside her, and she thought, He is growing bored, he will fly.
